Olympic Pavilion
2012 London, UK.
Set in Trafalgar Square London, this temporary pavilion provides a focus point with facilities including cafe, screen, shop and info center. Utilizing the squares presence as an informal focal point for the cities people, the pavilion transports the event in micro form into the heart of London.
As a temporary structure the form has a lightness and poise reflected in the materiality. The pavilion takes the shape of a twisted running track, rising up to create a dramatic sheltered enclosure. The form maximizes the potential of the site by using the steps at the northern edge of Trafalgar Square as an existing auditorium. The form is sliced to provide access points, the curved openings are created using parabolic curves, the curve created when chasing the path of objects through space. A large screen faces these steps creating interaction with the pavilion. The design itself communicates dynamism and rhythm, evocative of the nature of athletics and the Olympic event.
