Hill Cabin
2018 Lamma Island, Hong Kong.
The cabin is a refurbishment and modernisation of a ‘Fishermen’s Cottage’, a typology found throughout the New Territories of Hong Kong. Unlike the more ordered village houses, these residences appear on the outskirts of villages, often built in an ad hoc way, giving them a unique off grid style.
The concept reads the location and landscape, nestled up in the treetops, the building has the feeling of a cabin or lookout. As it also functions in this way, as a getaway, a place removed from the city.
The minimal style is focused on warm natural materials and a stripped down aesthetic, using just a warm white tone and a natural wood, the simplicity allows the materials to dominate. The vertical opening allows for a central feature which cuts through the void uniting the levels and breaking the lateral emphasis of the simple grid structure.
